Retirement
Requests for retirement shall be stated in writing to the Bishop at least 120 days prior to the date on which the retirement is to be effective (usually July 1st.) For retirement following Annual Conference, requests must be received no later March 1. To ensure a smooth transition, please submit your request at the earliest possible date. Refer to paragraph 359.
It is also a courtesy to confer with your Superintendent prior to any written request for a change of Conference Relations.

Appointments to Extension Ministries
Elders desiring an appointment extending the ministry of The United Methodist Church or change of appointment shall consult with their Bishop and/or district superintendent prior to any interviews relative to such an appointment.
When a conference member, appointed to an Extension Ministry, requests appointment to a pastoral change, the request shall be made in writing to the Bishop, the Cabinet and the Board of Ordained Ministry at least (6) months prior to Annual Conference. Refer to paragraphs 343, 344, and 345. Address your letter to the Bishop and copy the following:
